Soccer & Achievements

JJ’s passion for soccer was matched only by his dedication to mastering the game. Whether training with Vitoria FC as a young prodigy or earning Player of the Year at Juventus Academy Boston, JJ pushed himself and his teammates to excel. He was often seen perfecting passes and corner shots on weekends, never content with mediocrity. In his final high school season, JJ led the state with 22 assists, showcasing his selflessness and vision as a player. His efforts propelled the Jaguars to an impressive 8-2 record, earning him the South Division MVP title. JJ’s commitment extended beyond the field, as evidenced by his crowning as prom king—a rare honor that reflected his ability to connect with everyone he met.

Early Life & Family

From the moment he could walk, JJ was rarely without a soccer ball at his feet. His parents fondly recall how the living room became his first field, where he perfected his dribbling moves. At school, JJ was the kid who made everyone feel welcome, earning admiration for his warmth and inclusivity. When his sister competed in gymnastics and volleyball, JJ was her loudest cheerleader, balancing his own demanding schedule with unwavering family support. His parents often joked that JJ’s life revolved around soccer, but his heart belonged equally to his family and friends. These bonds, forged through love and laughter, became the foundation of his remarkable character.

Tributes & Memories

JJ Facey Foot Skills

Up until sixth grade, I was considered the best at soccer in our grade. JJ came in and undoubtedly took that away from me. By 7th and 8th grade people started playing football more, but in particular, that sixth grade year, we would always play soccer at recess and he would get picked first without contest. He even played with the wrist sling and could dominate us. I never knew that one of his nicknames outside of Charter was Bigfoot, but it definitely fits because we used to say “release the kraken” when he’d line up for a shot. He could shoot it from anywhere, he was that good.

JJ’s attitude is one all coaches would want in a player. At times, I would think “I wish I had eleven JJs on the field." His positive attitude and work ethic was second to none. I remember JJ was battling an injury this past year and he sat out for a little bit, but he still made it to every game and training to support his teammates. No matter how difficult things may have been he showed up with a smile and a positive attitude.

JJ was always there for me. He was my free therapist and listened to me talk our whole shift, he knew about the hard stuff going on in my life and he was the hand that always led me to positivity. Leaving work having to run to my car in the pouring rain, I didn’t worry about that when I was with JJ. He took the rain for me. He ran to his car so I wouldn’t get wet. I walked in for my shift heart broken, struggling, JJ made me forget my sadness, made me forget my heart was aching, he made me happy and made me enjoy the small moments. JJ Facey taught me to cherish the small things and the important moments.

Never Stop Smiling

All the memories of JJ are fond, but what stands out most vividly is his infectious, radiant smile. Throughout the years I knew him, JJ seemed to embody happiness, his joy emanating from within. His smile was so infectious that I couldn't help but respond in kind and smile.

Captain Facey

At first I just knew him as a soccer player, but then it grew into something much deeper. He became my friend. I looked up to him. He always kept motivating me. He was my hero in terms of soccer. I was really glad that I met him, and I'm really sad that we lost him. I'm captain (now) and I'm just doing my best to honor him.

Jason Jr. was dedicated and hardworking. He was punctual and caring. He was socks with crocs and an almost always empty water bottle that needed to be filled and big bright sparkling eyes. Jason Jr. was willing, if you asked him to do something he would happily do it, after he refilled his water bottle of course. Jason Jr. was gentle. He was so helpful with the elder customers and caring toward his coworkers. Jason Jr. was an Acura. He was a conversation about exhaust pipes and tint, he was a goofy conversation about who's car was faster and whether or not his car would have green exhaust someday too. Jason Jr. was a kind soul, remarkable wisdom and he was bright beyond his years. Jason Jr. was gentle, genuine, decent and rare. Jason Jr. was a display of integrity, he was a kind word, a laugh, a handshake, a goofy saying, a part of our family.

Ryan & JJ

You never gave anything less than 100% for me in every practice and every game. Always turning up with a smile, never complained about the ridiculous tactics I asked you to play at times, just always gave everything. Coaching you, hanging out with you and your family, having a great time at K1 - I loved it all. It was such an honor to be your coach. Such a happy person and born winner. I have memories that you have given me that will never fade. Thank you for being you JJ. You will be missed but never forgotten.

Such a bright spirit. Big smile, friendly, positive. A hard worker. He was incredibly kind. There were a couple of students who spoke at his (funeral) services who said that when they first came to school – you know, when you come to a new school you're very nervous – and JJ was the very first one to say, 'Hi, welcome. Come sit here.' It's such a hard loss, not only for the program but for everyone who knew him. We had a Number 7. There won't be another one.

Why Screening Matters

Early health screenings are vital, especially for youth athletes. Many young people exhibit no symptoms, making early detection essential. Screenings can uncover hidden risks, enabling lifestyle adjustments, treatments, or even life-saving interventions. By prioritizing screenings, families and communities can safeguard young athletes from unforeseen health issues and ensure their long-term well-being. Inspired by JJ, our number 7, we present #7's Preventative Measures to promote overall health. These steps empower parents and leaders to create safer environments, making screenings a cornerstone of youth sports safety.

Advocating Awareness in Memory of JJ

JJ’s story highlights the importance of health awareness and early detection. A dedicated athlete who excelled on the soccer field, JJ appeared to be in peak physical condition. He trained rigorously, showcased incredible athletic ability, and inspired everyone around him with his passion and determination. Yet, beneath his vibrant exterior, an undetected condition tragically cut his promising life short. JJ’s story reminds us that even the healthiest individuals can face hidden risks. By sharing his journey, we aim to highlight the urgent need for comprehensive health screenings to protect young athletes and prevent future tragedies. JJ’s legacy compels us to prioritize health and empower families with knowledge and proactive care.

How to Get Screened

Accessing health screenings for youth athletes can feel overwhelming, but taking the first step is crucial. Begin by consulting your family doctor or pediatrician, who can recommend specific tests such as EKGs, echocardiograms, or cardiac stress tests. Many local and national organizations also offer resources to guide families toward screening programs tailored for young athletes. Programs like whoweplayfor.org provide valuable assistance in locating screenings and understanding the process. Remember, scheduling regular checkups and discussing concerns with trusted healthcare providers are powerful tools to ensure your child’s well-being.
